"I could easily spend the rest of my days in silence" – Five minutes with Alex Lac

It's not every day that you get to learn something new about one of your colleagues. I kicked off our '5 minutes with...' series with my colleague Alex Lac – one of our friendly Dealing and Relationship Managers – and I was pleasantly surprised to learn about his softer side: why he'd donate his last dollar to charity and, if he had one month left, fly to Tibet to spend the rest of his days in silence.

I hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed talking to Alex. And if you have any suggestions for who I should interview next and what I could ask them, I'd love to know in the comments section below.

Naomi: What's one thing most people don't know about you?

Alex: I think many of my colleagues here at Rivkin, and indeed many of my clients, think I'm a quiet person – but actually I'm quite talkative when you get me chatting about something I'm interested in – like technical analysis and charting for example. On a personal level, most people also don't know that I subscribe to the Buddhist philosophy – I'm always trying to be more mindful and improve as a person and I try to minimise hurting other beings, which means I eat a largely plant-based diet.

Naomi: If you were to audition on Australian Idol, what song would you sing?

Alex: I love romantic ballads, and one of my favourite artists is Josh Groban. I think I would sing his song To where you are – although not as well as him [laughs].

Naomi: What's the last gift you gave someone?

Alex: I recently got back from a family holiday in China, and I bought everyone at Rivkin a lucky charm keyring. I gave away different charms such as prosperity, health and love...I think everyone liked them! [Laughs].

Naomi: One of Rivkin's brand values is to inspire people to become 'financially fearless'. What does that term mean to you?

Alex: My advice to people would be to not shy away from the markets and to have the courage to take calculated risks and learn from your mistakes. Trading and investing is a fluid process of continuous improvement – just like everything in life, and when you break it down like that and take the mindset that every trade or investment is a learning opportunity, then there's nothing to be fearful of. I love that my job allows me to inspire people to become financially fearless.

Naomi: What do you love about working for Rivkin?

Alex: Rivkin is really unique – completely different from any other company I've worked for. I love coming to work because I love my clients and the environment everyone creates here. I love that I don't think twice about approaching our CEO, Scott Schuberg, for an informal chat, and it's the small things – like the cakes on everyone's birthdays, the monthly trivia nights and regular team dinners – that makes it such a great place to work.

Naomi: If you only had a small pool of money and one month left to live, what would you do or buy?

Alex: If you asked me this five years ago, my answer would've been totally different – I used to actively seek adventure and probably would've said something like 'bungee jumping,' however, now I really value and actively seek inner peace and stillness. My wife and I became parents recently which has also changed my outlook and priorities in life. I think I would buy a ticket to Tibet – somewhere I've never been but always wanted to go; I could easily spend the rest of my days there in silence and enjoying nature. The rest of any money leftover I would donate to a child-related charity.
